Thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah members exploded simultaneously across Lebanon on Tuesday. The coordinated attack killed at least nine people and wounded approximately 2,800 others. Hezbollah described the incident as the biggest security breach the group has faced since the Gaza war began.
Nobody has claimed responsibility yet. Hezbollah blamed Israel for the operation. A source from the militant group suggested the attack came in response to an alleged assassination attempt on a former Israeli security official.
At least three confirmed deaths include two Hezbollah fighters. Lebanon's Health Minister Firas Abiad reported roughly 170 victims remain in critical condition. Iran's ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, sustained minor injuries and is under hospital observation, according to Iranian news agencies.
Videos posted on social media captured chaotic scenes across Beirut. Ambulances rushed to treat victims suffering burns and injuries to their hands and hips. Similar incidents occurred in Tyre and throughout villages in the Beqaa valley.
Lebanon's health ministry immediately mobilized all healthcare workers and placed hospitals on maximum alert. Authorities warned the public to avoid wireless communication devices due to the risks of additional explosions.
According to reports, one Hezbollah official told Reuters the explosions marked an unprecedented communications compromise. Speculation has circulated that Israel may have penetrated Hezbollah's telecommunications systems. Several commanders have been assassinated in locations previously considered secure.
The militant group launched rocket and drone strikes against Israel nearly a year ago in solidarity with Hamas. Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated dramatically in recent months, fueling speculation about a major military operation.
